From the Multispeak FAQ Page:
Is MultiSpeak “plug-and-play”? Doesn’t this take care of all of my integration needs?
Unfortunately, the requirements for integration of software applications in the utility industry are just too complicated and diverse for any single specification to provide a universal “plug-and-play” solution for every utility.
MultiSpeak assumes that a utility only uses programs and control systems that strictly adhere to it’s latest set of arbitrary standards for integrated communications.
The problem is that in order to make these systems communicate with your GIS, you either have to make sure that everything you buy adheres to the latest and greatest MultiSpeak standards, or you’ll have to hire a programmer to come in and write custom code. They will create a few queries and reports that will give you access to some of the information you want. Then, if you ever decide that you want a different type of information, (or even if you just want to ask a different question of the same data,) it will have to be rewritten again - costing you more time and even more money.
Using MultiSpeak compatible software gives you some access, but it only gives you the parts of the database that MultiSpeak protocols support - not direct access - and in most cases some of your utility systems don’t speak the language and will either need to be hard-coded anyways or just simply not integrated at all. Custom coding is time consuming, costs a lot of money and is inefficient - but it does give you access to a lot more data and data systems allowing you to integrate everything and anything you want… IF money is no object.

mPower’s Integrator™ software can bridge the gap
Integrator™ connects directly to any ODBC compliant database allowing you to access the data directly and distribute that information to anyone in your organization that needs it. It interfaces with all SCADA, AMR, AMI and legacy systems. This would also include CIS/Billing system data, parcel data from government sources, Oracle, SQL, and access databases – even ancient systems like PAMIS & AS400 are supported. It does not replace any of the systems you are currently using, but instead gives you access all of your various systems (and their data) through one simple browser interface. It also allows you to develop your own browser based queries and reports - without programming – pulling data from one or multiple systems simultaneously while at the same time giving you the ability to display this information visually.
Integrator™ can also be used to create a kiosk for centralized data distribution – documents, work orders, Safety Data Sheets, images, A/V files, as-builts, historical scans, catalog data, etc. – and because Integrator™ gives you the power to link all of this data quickly and easily without programming– there really is no limit on how far you can go with your GIS system.
Aside from just tying everything together, when used in conjunction with mapping software, mPower Integrator™ also gives an end user the ability to do trace flow analysis and outage management, monitor assets and inventory levels, perform KVA Load analysis, and produce PCB and contaminate reports with regard to spatial and/or topographical distribution. Integrator™ can even overlay your maps, data and tool tips right on top of Google Earth.
Integrator™ works with all utility types – Gas, Electric, Water, Sewer, Steam, Condensate, Fiber, Telco – you name it, Integrator™ does it.
And it can do it all without custom programing or viewers and regardless of if your systems are MultiSpeak compliant or not.
